Non-parametric models in social science
by

Some measures of a non-parametric nature, used widely in the Social Sciences, may lack meaning if not based on any underlying model. One example is the measure of agreement for categorical data, Cohen's kappa. An appropriate model was formulated by Darroch and Glonek. This is for purely categorical responses: the commonly used modification for ordinal data appears to have no hope of deriving from a meaningful model. Dealing with this problem raises some interesting difficulties.
