On the union of simply connected planar sets

We shall prove that the union of any two simply connected compact subspaces of the plane is simply connected if their intersection is path connected and cellular. We shall also show that there exist two simply connected compact subspaces of the plane with a simply connected intersection and a nonsimply connected union. (This is a joint work with U.H.Karimov)
