A Fresh Look at Changing Paradigms in Inference
by
C.C. Heyde
Australian National University, Canberra and Columbia University, New York

Inference as it is being taught in our major universities remains rather static and many of the products of modern research are not being passed on to the next generation of statisticians. Furthermore, research needs are changing, as is our capacity to use computers as a tool for model exploration and the checking of large sample theory. These views will be illustrated through discussion of a collection of modern problems which fall outside the classical paradigms. Comments will also be given about possible changes to the curriculum in response to recent trends.
