The Effect of Symmetry on the Solutions to Elliptic PDEs
by
James W. Swift
Univ of Northern Arizona
This talk concerns elliptic BVPs with symmetry. Several systems studied by John M. Neuberger's group here at NAU are examined. While none of these systems were chosen with the intention of studying symmetric PDEs, all of them have interesting symmetry. Symmetry is not a "generic" feature, and for the most part those attending this conference seek theorems which apply to systems without symmetry. However, when we write down a specific system to study numerically, symmetry is often (dare I say "almost always"?) present.
