A compactification of polynomial coalgebras
by
Rob Goldblatt
Victoria University of Wellington

Coalgebras of endofunctors on SET are of current interest in theoretical computer science, as they have been found useful in modelling a variety of data structures and state-based systems (lists, streams, trees, automata, object-oriented classes). This talk will discuss the construction of the ``ultrafilter enlargement'' of coalgebras for ``polynomial'' functors. The construction can be expressed as a kind of Stone-Cech compactification. It has been used to develop an analogue for coalgebras of Birkhoff's famous structural characterization of equational classes of algebras.
