The Topology of Compact Groups
by
Sidney A. Morris
University of Ballarat, Australia

The topological group structure of connected compact groups is described in detail in the 835 page book ``The Structure of Compact Groups: A Primer for the Student - A Handbook for the Expert'' by Karl Heinrich Hofmann and Sidney A. Morris, de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics, Volume 25, 1998, ISBN 3-11-015268-1. For totally disconnected compact groups, that is, profinite groups, the structure is described in two books both titled ``Profinite Groups'' by J.S. Wilson, published in 1998 by Clarendon Press, Oxford and by L. Ribes published in 2000 by Springer-Verlag, Berlin etc., Ergebnisse 3, Folge 40. The purpose of this talk is to use the known topological group structure theory to describe to general topologists the topology of compact groups.
