Covarieties of coalgebras

Covarieties w.r.t. to an endofunctor F on a complete category C are introduced, characterized, and shown to correspond precisely to the comonadic categories over C. Examples include so-called categories of systems (over Set) and k-coalgebras over Vectk (k a field). It will be shown that, in interesting cases, but not in general, F-covarieties are locally finitely presentable categories provided that F is a finitely accessible functor.
