The Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE) is working with the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to develop a model to evaluate the effectiveness of AQIS operations at Sydney airport and to identify areas where reallocation of resources may lead to better detection of quarantine risks.
As part of this project, we perform statistical analysis of combined seizure data, random searches data (both from AQIS) and arrivals data from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) to estimate the incidence of seized undeclared high risk items and leakage rates of high risk items in the arrivals channels, by variables like flight number. By doing this, we can identify and quantify risks associated with each flight.
