Estimating the effect of varying interview dates on Australia Labour Force estimates

The Monthly Population Survey is a household based survey. Interviews are conducted over a two week period in the middle of each month. The interview period for a particular month starts on a different date every year. The start date between two successive interview periods is usually 4 or 5 weeks. This variation is called the interview date effect which may affect the survey estimates. The seasonal adjustment process, as currently used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, may not possess the ability to handle the dynamic nature of employment status when coupled with the moving interview date effect. This paper presents a variety of research methods which have been used to identify the interview date effect.
