The Statistical Clearing House has been operating for almost five years reviewing over 400 surveys. Over this time the Statistical Clearing House has been able to reduce respondent load, and improve quality. During 2001, the main impact of the Statistical Clearing House review process was on the quality of survey design, with improvements made to almost half of the 114 surveys reviewed. The review process consistently identified several issues that needed improvement. These issues should be kept in mind for future surveys and include: insufficient time allocated to planning and developing surveys; _ lack of questionnaire testing; _ poor justification of sample sizes; _ lack of attention paid to improving response rates. _ This talk will discuss these issues and some suggested solutions in detail.
