From our experience of working with clients in a number of industries, we were led to ask the question: what happens when we are not there? When viewed from the client's point of view, statistical consulting, however presented, is essentially a problem-solving methodology. In this paper, we will present the elements of that problem-solving methodology, and the issues and impediments that arise when it is applied in the workplace. We will stress the importance of the role of the statistician in helping the client to move from final recommendation to actions which "hold the gains".
