Characteristic properties of discrete food-chains

We derive and analyze a discrete version of Rosenzweig's food-chain model (Am. Nat. 1973) and discuss its basic dynamical properties. The model has four equilibria, one corresponding to each possible length of the food-chain. The model constitutes no exception to May's (1971) expectation that food-web complexity does not in general increase stability. We give conditions for that equilibria corresponding to coexistence of two and three species lose their stability through a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation and give som characteristic patterns of the ensuing cycles.
