A combinatorial construction using tori (or solid tori) produces 2-complexes (or families of 3-manifolds) with large symmetry groups. The resulting structures are not completely understood in general. I will present the recipe for construction, along with enough specific examples to illustrate some of the interesting phenomena that have been observed.
