The variable mass Schrödinger equation appears in semiconductor heterostructures because the effective mass of the electron changes along the heterostructure. A unitary transformation is presented that preserves the spectral data such as the transmittance of the device and gets rid of the variable mass difficulty allowing to use standard Inverse Scattering techniques. This allows to build the structural and compositional data of the heterostructure from the knowledge of its functional data such as the transmittance energy dependence.
