The plate stacks of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute contain some 50000 plates taken with several telescopes in Moscow, Moscow Region, Crimea, and other sites after 1895. The most important part of the archive are plates taken with the 40-cm astrograph in Crimea, the same instrument that was used prior to World War II in Sonneberg. The archive is maintained in an excellent shape, the percentage of high-quality plates is very high. We are now starting a project of this archive's complete digitization using high-resolution scanners. We will describe the archive and the current state of its digitization and discuss its applications for studies of variable stars, astrometry, and other purposes.
