Size-biased distributions arise naturally in common (and uncommon) approaches to sampling trees and other components of forests. We briefly describe several forest inventory protocols for which size-biased distributions are useful. Then, we exploit the properties of size-biased distributions to answer some important practical questions. Are there parameters of forest structure for which common size-biased sampling procedures are inherently unsuitable? Are there parameters for which additional efficiencies (e.g., through subsampling) can be anticipated a priori during the design stage?
