A hyperbolic group can be compactified by adding its Gromov boundary. We give an elementary presentation of the structure of this boundary emphasizing the idea that the group viewed as a hyperbolic space can roughly be reconstructed from its boundary. In particular, we explain the role of cross ratios and relate them to the geodesic flow in the case that our group is the fundamental group of a negatively curved manifold.
