Discrete Groups and Operator Algebras I and II

I will explain the interactions between discrete groups and operator algebras. No C*-knowledge is assumed; I will start from ground zero and (hopefully) reach a tantalizing reformulation of the following open problem: Is every hyperbolic group residually finite? Along the way, amenability and Kazhdan's property T will appear.
