Amenable covers, minimal volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds

Using basic facts about measured equivalence relations and ergodic theory, we explain the relation between the minimal volume and L2-Betti numbers of closed aspherical manifolds. This is a geometric application of the circle of ideas around Gaboriau's theory.
