To test the general belief of the superiority of English medium schools ( EMS ) over non English medium schools ( NEMS ) , a statistical analysis of the academic performance of the students belonging to these two groups has been carried out in this paper .
The sample consists of 420 class X students of Assam ( India ) ;among which, 120 students belong to EMS and 300 students belong to NEMS .
The pass percentage of EMS ( 88.33 ) is better than that of NEMS( 80.61) and the students of EMS perform better than the students of NEMS in all the compulsory subjects which have been proved to be true after conducting large sample normality tests . However this difference is maximum for G EN ( 17.37 ) and minimum for M I L ( 3.1 ) . In the remaining subjects the difference is more than ten marks . A detailed division wise performance of students in English and non English medium groups has been carried out .
Interestingly , in EMS the students are performing worst in General Mathematics whereas in NEMS the students are performing worst in General English .
A comparison of performance of male and female students ( EMS and NEMS) indicates that there is close association among medium , sex and academic performance .
Key words : Academic performance ,class X students, Large sample Normal test , Chi square test
