A general class of evolutionary equations
by
Jack K. Hale
School of Math, Georgia Tech, Atlanta, GA

A general class of evolutionary equations is given which serves to unify classical ODE, PDE, retarded and neutral ODE and PDE. Illustrations are given for systems of PDE on a bounded domain coupled through parts of the boundary with special emphasis on transmission lines. If the domain is one dimensional, this gives rise to an interesting system of neutral partial functional differential equations. A theory of heat conduction in solids also is discussed and yields similar but more general neutral partial functional differential equations. New problems in spectral theory are mentioned.
