Educational talk: extension of homeomorphisms of spheres and applications.

In this talk we shall describe an elementary method to construct nice maps between manifolds which are volume contracting up to a computable constant. We shall show how these maps allow to give a simple proof of Mostow's rigidity theorem in the rank one case. A different construction and other applications will be given by Gilles Courtois.
