We show that a finitely generated discrete group G of isometries acting on a simply connected riemannian manifold X of sectional curvature -a2 ≤ K ≤ -1 is either 1) virtually nilpotent or 2) has algebraic entropy ent(G) ≥ C(n, a) > 0 where C(n, a) is a constant depending only on the dimension n of X and the lower bound on the curvature of X.
