Bacterial biofilms are (often spatially highly heterogeneous) accumulations of microorganisms on surfaces in aqueous environments. The past decade saw a huge activity in modeling the development of those structures, using either discrete stochastic models or continuous deterministic models. We discuss a system of ODEs on a lattice structure that can be understood as a link between representatives of both approaches. We present model formulation, some analytical results and show numerical simulations.
