The Chern-Simons invariant of a hyperbolic manifold
by
Christian Zickert
Columbia University

We present a simple method for computing the generalized volume (vol+ics) of a hyperbolic manifold. Our method uses the concept of a flattening introduced by Walter Neumann. We describe a way of reading off the flattenings directly from an ideal triangulation. Our method generalizes to define and compute the generalized volume of a parabolic representation of any tame 3-manifold.
