A two-time-level semi-Lagrangian spectral model of the shallow water equations with variable resolution
by

In this talk, a new two-time-level semi-Lagrangian spectral method is proposed and applied to the shallow water equations. It permits much larger time steps without loss of accuracy. This method is based on the new reformulation of the shallow water equations on the sphere. Combining with a conformal mapping of the underlying Gaussian grid, this method could provide more accurate details of the flow on a specified location with lower cost comparing with the three-time-level spectral method. Accuracy and stability of the method are compared with uniform spectral methods.
