On the variety generated by planar modular lattices

The variety V in the title has recently been studied by G. Gratzer [1: On the variety generated by planar modular lattices, available at http://server.math.umanitoba.ca/homepages/gratzer/]. Problem 1 in [1] asks if V has continuumly many subvarieties. Our main result gives an affirmative answer.
