The free spectra of semigroup varieties

We give a review of old and recent results on the free spectra of semigroup varieties. Although quite a few people investigate this topic of general algebra (e.g. S. Crvenkovi\'c, I. Dolinka, K. Kátai G. Pluhár, N. Ruskuc, S.Seif, J. Wood), very few results are known in the area.
