Is the box product of countably many convergent sequences paracompact?

The question of the title is an old unsolved problem. There is a positive answer in many models, but no answer is known in ZFC. The main result is that, in ZFC, the space in question has many paracompact subspaces, and a technique is presented which produces such subspaces.
