Solution to a Problem of Van Douwen
by
Dilip Raghavan
UW--Madison

We answer a long standing question of Van Douwen by proving in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in {omega}^{omega} which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. It is easy to construct such a family under CH or MA. Van Douwen asked if the construction could be carried out just in ZFC. The problem is mentioned in Arnie Miller's 1993 problem list (Problem 4.2)
