A tale of two mapping classes
by
Paul Bankston
Marquette University

In the 1960s Andrew Lelek introduced confluent mappings between continua, providing an important generalization of both openness and monotonicity. Several decades later, we introduced co-existential mappings between compacta-inspired by model-theoretic considerations, but definable entirely in topological terms-and proceeded to discover a number of intriguing comparisons and contrasts between these mappings and the confluent ones. This is a progress report.
