Solution to a problem of Van Douwen
by
Dilip Raghavan
UW--Madison

We answer a long standing question of Van Douwen by showing in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in ww which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. It is easy to see that CH or MA is sufficient to construct such a family. Van Douwen asked if such a family always exists. The problem was mentioned by A. Miller in his 1993 problem list "Some interesting problems" (Problem 4.2).
