The distribution of irreducible polynomials over a finite field
by
Paul Pollack

It has long been known that the ring of polynomials over a finite field shares many similarities with the ring of rational integers, with the irreducible polynomials playing the role of the prime numbers. In this talk we look at what is known in the polynomial setting about some of the chief unsolved problems in prime number theory (e.g., the twin prime conjecture and Goldbach's conjecture).
