Recent developments in coarse geometry

I will give a quick overview of what is known about the quasi-isometric classification of groups and related spaces. This problem has some surprising connections with a variety of areas of mathematics. If time permits, I will discuss the machinery of coarse differentiation developed with Alex Eskin and with David Fisher.
