In memory of Bill Transue
by
Krystyna Kuperberg
Auburn University
Coauthors: Piotr Minc

Bill Transue, our dear friend, passed away on December 17, 2008. Bill was a very talented, accomplished mathematician, and he made significant contributions to mathematics at Auburn. He stood for integrity, fairness, and quality, both as a teacher and as a mathematician. The Spring Topology Conference was held at Auburn four times, and each time Bill was one of the main organizers. In 1969 he also edited the proceedings of the conference.

This talk, given jointly with Piotr Minc, consists of two parts. Piotr's collaboration with Bill on dynamical systems is addressed in his abstract. I shall describe the mathematical collaboration involving Bill, Wlodek Kuperberg, and myself. The three of us wrote two joint papers on the rigidity of Cartesian products, a notion that we introduced to address restrictions on homeomorphisms of certain locally connected homogeneous continua. In our first paper, using the concept mentioned above, we answered a question of G. Ungar by constructing a homogeneous, locally connected continuum that was not 2-homogeneous.
