Forceless, ineffective, powerless proofs of descriptive set-theoretic dichotomy theorems

Over the last 35 years, a variety of dichotomy theorems have been discovered whose statements are purely classical in nature, yet whose proofs require somewhat sophisticated techniques from mathematical logic. We will discuss an elementary approach to proving and generalizing these theorems.
