Compactifying the space of flat structures.

Using Bonahon's space of geodesic currents, we describe a compactification of the space of flat structures on a closed surface. The points which are added have a geometric description as ``mixed structures'' on the surface. A mixed structure is a hybrid of a flat structure and a measured lamination.
