Equivalence relations generated by profinite actions of countable groups

Orbit equivalence relations of profinite actions of groups have recently been a focus of attention in ergodic theory and operator algebras. I will discuss some background and a new characterization of such equivalence relations allowing, in particular, to prove some closure properties of the class.
