Hyperbolic Geometry and Commensurability
by
Genevieve Walsh
Tufts University

These lectures will be an introduction to commensurability of manifolds and orbifolds. We will give examples of hyperbolic surfaces and 2-orbifolds, and discuss the symmetry groups of hyperbolic surfaces. We will also look at some hyperbolic 3-manifolds and orbifolds which are commensurable, and discuss relations with arithmeticity and volume. The last day we will address the special case of commensurable knot complements. Throughout, the hyperbolic case will be emphasized, but other examples of commensurable manifolds and orbifolds will be explored.
