Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Applications to Materials

April 30 - May 2, 1999

Minneapolis, MN, USA

Mathematics

Host: University of Minnesota
Homepage: http://www.ima.umn.edu/~gulliver/confs/pdemat.html

Organizers: Robert Gulliver (University of Minnesota), Fernando Reitich (University of Minnesota)

Description:
The workshop will bring together researchers in materials science, applications of PDEs, analysis of PDEs and numerics in a setting which will allow informal interaction as well as a selection of hour talks by leaders in the respective fields. In this manner, issues of intense interest in materials science will be brought to the attention of modelers, theoretical analysts and numerical analysts for discussion with the expectation that they will provide ideas and insight useful for the challenges offered by materials research. At the same time, new concepts and methods currently being brought to bear on the fundamental issues in the analysis of PDEs (numerical and theoretical) will be presented in a way which may open new paths of inquiry for modelers and for materials scientists. Topics which will be discussed include level-set methods, viscosity solutions of scalar PDEs and of systems, nonlinear homogenization, multiple time scales, widely varying length scales, fast numerical methods, and mesoscale models derived from microscale with their relations with the macroscale viewpoint.
