Description:
Computational algebra and algebraic geometry is a very active and rapidly growing field, with
many applications to other areas of mathematics, as well as computer science and
engineering. Easily accessible without extensive specialized mathematical expertise, the theory
very quickly leads to deep research problems as well as realistic applications to other
subjects. This conference will treat the theory and the applications of computational algebra
and algebraic geometry. After working through the theoretical foundations, most importantly
the theory of Groebner bases for collections of polynomials, we will develop the necessary
specialized algebra and geometry for the applications on which the second part of the
program will focus. We plan on presenting applications to other areas of mathematics as well
as to realistic problems from engineering. Hands-on computations with several common
computer algebra systems will play an important role in the workshop. The intended audience
is graduate students and faculty in mathematics, engineering, and computer science.
