School on Modern Statistical Methods in Medical Research

(in conjunction with ICMS, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK)

September 6-24, 1999

Trieste, Italy

Mathematics

Host: The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics

Email: smr1122@ictp.trieste.it

Organizers: E. J. T. Goetghebeur (University of Ghent, Belgium), J. L. Hutton (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom), P. J. Solomon (University of Adelaide, Australia)

Deadline for abstracts: February 28, 1999

Description:
Statistics is fundamental to contemporary biomedical research. Landmark statistical developments that have been profoundly influential include Cox's model for the analysis of survival data and contributions from statisticians around the world to efforts to control the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Expert advice from statisticians and epidemiologists is crucial for appropriate health-data collection and analysis, for informing government debate and for developing public health policies and strategies. The School represents a confluence of leading international researchers in rapidly developing areas of biostatistics, including statistical methods for AIDS, epidemic modelling and survival analysis. Participants will have a unique opportunity to enhance their statistical knowledge by instruction and consultation at the highest levels, and to develop statistical computing skills using Splus, SAS or STATA.

PROGRAMME

The first two weeks will be devoted to instructional lectures of an expository nature combined with tutorials and practical workshops. The instructors and topics will be:

Norman Breslow (University of Washington, Seattle, U.S.A.) Alternative study designs and methods of analysis

Sir David Cox, FRS (Oxford University, U.K.) Components of variance

Victor DeGruttola (Harvard School of Public Health, U.S.A.) Design and Analysis of Antiretroviral Trials

Els Goetghebeur (University of Ghent, Belgium) Causal inference

David Harrington (Harvard School of Public Health & Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, U.S.A.) Survival analysis

Valerie Isham (University College, London) & Patty Solomon (University of Adelaide, Australia) Modelling of the transmission of infectious diseases

Juni Palmgren (Stockholm University, Sweden) Principles, models and methods for handling missing data

William Venables (University of Adelaide, Australia) Linear, non-linear and generalized linear mixed models

The third week will be devoted to a 'state-of-the-art' research Conference with themes and speakers from the instruction weeks plus genetic epidemiology, environmental epidemiology and medical imaging. Further invited speakers include Keith Abrams, Mike Campbell, John Copas, Christl Donnelly, Ian Ford, Geert Molenberghs, Louise Ryan, Nuala Sheehan and Jeremy M.G. Taylor. In addition, participants will be invited to contribute to the Conference.

PARTICIPATION

The School is open to statisticians, biostatisticians and epidemiologists from all countries of the world which are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA. The main purpose of the ICTP is to help research workers from developing countries through a programme of training activities within a framework of international cooperation. However, scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. Participants will typically have completed at least a Masters degree or equivalent in statistics, biostatistics or epidemiology, and have worked or studied in a health-related area for several years. As the School will be conducted in English, participants should have a good working knowledge of that language.

Speakers: Norman Breslow (University of Washington, Seattle, U.S.A.), Sir David Cox, FRS (Oxford University, U.K.), Victor DeGruttola (Harvard School of Public Health, U.S.A.), Els Goetghebeur (University of Ghent, Belgium), David Harrington (Harvard School of Public Health & Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, U.S.A.), Valerie Isham (University College, London), Patty Solomon (University of Adelaide, Australia), Juni Palmgren (Stockholm University, Sweden), William Venables (University of Adelaide, Australia), Keith Abrams, Mike Campbell, John Copas, Christl Donnelly, Ian Ford, Geert Molenberghs, Louise Ryan, Nuala Sheehan and Jeremy M.G.
