Organizers: L. Mahadevan ( Mechanical Engineering, MIT), Annette Hosoi (Mathematics, MIT)
Description:
The underlying mathematical theme will be the role of 1-2 dimensional geometry, and the underlying physical theme will be the role of scaling concepts.
Applications to problems in materials science and biophysics such as surface and interface dynamics, the mechanics of foams, gels and liquid crystals, the break-up of liquid filaments and sheets, the buckling of structures, the physics of biological membranes and filaments, the evolution of shape and form etc.)
Prerequisites: familiarity with PDEs, basic notions of continuum mechanics (e.g. solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, electrodynamics), familiarity with Maple, Matlab, Mathematica.
