Description:
The aim of this conference is to bring together mathematicians interested in or working on subjects of relevance to music, and musicians who make use of computational methods. As a contribution to the EMS-series Diderot Forum by the European Mathematical Society, the primary aim of the conference is to raise public awareness of the role of mathematics in our society, in particular by showing the multiple connections and mutual influences which exist between music and mathematics - both unique cultural goods. In contrast to the parallel events in Lisbon (historical aspects) and Paris (formal and logical aspects, programming and mathematical structures), the conference in Vienna will put emphasis on computational and mathematical aspects of music synthesis, analysis, restoration and related topics.

The workshop covers the following topics:

synthesis of musical sounds analysis of musical sounds (transcription digital data - MIDI, time-frequency methods, quantitative analysis of instruments and musical interpretation) restoration and improvement of old recordings and mathematical algorithms "instrument optimization" (instrumental parameter identification) coding strategies for musical information mathematical models for musical sound or rhythm

Speakers: W. Fitzgerald (Cambridge, UK), G. DePoli (Padua, Italy), X. Serra (Barcelona, Spain), G. Wakefield (Ann Arbor, Michigan, US)
