Description:
During the last several decades, much significant progress has been made in the mathematical understanding of partial
differential equations which stemmed from fluid mechanics. Besides important advances in the study of related Cauchy
problems, contributions from other branches in mathematical analysis - such as that of dynamical system theory - have enabled
us to understand some qualitative aspects of the solutions.
The aim of this conference is to gather international specialists in these domains : nonlinear partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis, methods of harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, modelisation, numerical simulation ... Moreover, the ``World Mathematical Year 2000'' will be a special opportunity to sum up the most recent results, as well as to consider new perspectives.
One of the numerous domains of application of mathematical and numerical fluid mechanics is meteorology. Participation of specialists in meteorology and oceanography will allow interactions between theory and applications. New synergies should come out on this occasion.
This event will go on with a 2-day meeting in Poitiers, France, devoted to ``young colleagues in numerical analysis''. Young researchers are going to present different aspects of modern numerical methods in scientific computing.
Speakers: Alain BENSOUSSAN (C.N.E.S.), Jerry BONA (University of Texas), Haim BREZIS (Université de Paris VI), , Jean-Yves CHEMIN (Université de Paris VI), Philippe CIARLET (Université de Paris VI), , Ciprian FOIAS (Indiana University), Susan FRIEDLANDER (University of Illinois), Michael GHIL (University of California), Yoshikazu GIGA (Hokkaido University), David GOTTLIEB (University of Brown), Klaus KIRCHGAESSNER (University of Stuttgart), Jacques-Louis LIONS (Collège de France), Pierre-Louis LIONS (Université de Paris IX), Thomas MANTEUFFEL (University of Colorado), Gilbert STRANG (M.I.T.), Joseph TRIBBIA (N.C.A.R.), Robert VAUTARD (Ecole Normale Supérieure L.M.D.), Mark VISHIK (Russian Academy of Sciences)
