Description:
The Conceptual Modeling Conference (ER'99) is the 18th edition of one of the most important conferences in data and process modeling, database technology, and database applications. This conference is a wide forum for researchers and industrial experts interested in all aspects of database and information systems design and usage. Besides the scientific conference, tutorials, posters, exhibitions and workshops on hot research topics are organized. The research track includes 11 sessions which cover most of the topics related to conceptual modeling, database theory, database applications and experiments. The 33 accepted papers, composing these sessions, have been selected among 143 that have been submitted. Papers are originated from 36 countries from all continents.

Three keynote speakers, internationally known for their contributions in conceptual modeling and database research, and for their active role in knowledge dissemination, will give extended presentations on challenging topics both at the design, technology and application levels. Professor Peter Chen will present the results of an ongoing research on ER model, XML and the web. The talk of Professor Georges Gardarin is related to the first results of an ESPRIT project federating various data sources with XML and XML-QL. Finally, Professor Matthias Jarke will develop a way to capture and evaluate the experiences gained about process designs in so-called process data warehouses.

Four tutorials given by internationally recognized experts will provide surveys on the state-of-the-art in different aspects of modeling and design. Professor Tiziana Catarci will present advanced ideas about web based information access. A survey will discuss the main approaches adopted for letting the user effectively interact with the web. Her second tutorial will discuss visual interaction with databases. The main visual representation and interaction techniques used for achieving an effective retrieval of information from databases in local and global environment will be presented. Professor Leszek Maciaszek will discuss design aspects of large-scale client/server systems using UML. Principles, methods and techniques of good design will be described. Some extensions to UML to better address client/server system design will be proposed. Finally, Prof. Gerti Kappel will offer an overview of UML at work covering all the phases of the software life cycle. She will discuss ways to incorporate distribution and database issues during the design phase. Some emphasis will be put on up-to-date reuse concepts.

The conference is sponsored by different institutions and companies that organizers would like to thank for their scientific and financial support. Among them, let us mention the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), the ESSEC Graduate Business School, the PRiSM Laboratory of the University of Versailles, the Institut National de la Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA), the Institut National des Télécommunications (INT) and the Università di Roma la Sapienza.
