Mathematics

Host: Institut Fourier

Organizers: Michel BRION, Laurent BONAVÉRO

Description:
The class of toric varieties is a class of algebraic varieties important in several branches of mathematics: convex polytopes, birational geometry, singularities, arithmetic geometry... The geometry of these varieties is governed by simple objects of combinatorial nature, closely related to convex geometry, providing examples and test conjectures in algebraic or analytic geometry. Toric geometry has recently lead to substantial progress in several topics: classification of Fano varieties, decomposition of birational morphims and Mori theory, classification of singularities, mirror symetry, enumeration of points with bounded heights...

The aim of this summer school is to present the state of the art on these questions with minimal previous knowledge. In particular, the courses of the first week presuppose no prior familiarity with algebraic geometry.
