September 7-8, 2000

Coimbra, Portugal

Mathematics

Host: Centro Internacional de Matemática (CIM)
Sponsor: Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Centro de Estruturas Lineares e Combinatórias, Centro de Matemática da Universidade de Coimbra

Organizers: Fernando Conceição Silva (Lisboa), António Leal Duarte (Coimbra), Isabel Cabral (Lisboa), Susana Furtado (Porto)

Description:
The study of the possible eigenvalues and other properties of matrices when only part of the entries are known has a long tradition in Portugal. The first purpose of this workshop is to clarify the present state of knowledge in the area, including its applications to Systems Theory, the extentions to operators on infinite dimensional spaces and the usage of technics from Combinatorics and Algebraic Geometry. The second purpose is to enlarge the topics under research in this area in Portugal.

Speakers: Wayne Barrett (Brigham Young Univ., Provo, Utah, U.S.A.), Miroslav Fiedler (Mathematical Inst. Acad., Czech Republic), Pedro Freitas (Technical Univ. of Lisbon), Juan-Miguel Gracia (Univ. País Vasco, Vitoria, Spain), Charles Johnson (College of William and Mary, U.S.A.), Leiba Rodman (College of William and Mary, U.S.A.), Wang Xiaochang (Texas Tech Univ., U.S.A.), Ion Zaballa (Univ. País Vasco, Bilbao, Spain)

Date received: May 28, 2000
