Coleridge, Friendship and the Origins of Modernity

February 13-14, 2001

Coventry, United Kingdom

Philosophy

Host: University of Warwick
Homepage: http://www.aesthetics-online.org/events/coleridge.html

Organizers: Heather Jones

Description:
Recent philosophical interest in friendship and community has highlighted the important though ambiguous role played by relationships in Western thought. More particularly, among such diverse thinkers as Cavell, Blanchot and Derrida, the rethinking of friendship has enabled a reassessment of the writing, theory, and self-understanding that characterise modernity.

In the light of such concern, this two-day conference aims to consider the case of Coleridge and his political journal The Friend (1809-10, 3rd ed. 1818).
