June 3-12, 2001

Leeds, United Kingdom

History

Host: University of Leeds
Homepage: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/imi/imc/imc2001/imc2001.htm

Deadline for abstracts: September 30, 2000

Description:
Our intent is to foster a conversation among the multiple disciplines of medieval studies, including anthropology, archaeology, art history, drama, history, literature, liturgy, music, technology, philosophy, and theology. It is hoped that scholars will approach the idea of Familia and Domus in an international fashion, and consider it at a private and public level. Participants could consider the meaning and use of the words Familia and Domus, the values attributed to domesticity, the representation of the family and home in the arts, the role and nature of the family or household in public life, the public regulation of home life, by church or state, in all levels of society. Dr Sarah Rees Jones, from the Household Group of the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of York, will coordinate the strand.
